Saborino Sheet Masks Review

This is my first experience with a Japanese face sheet mask. I’m already a fan of the Korean or Chinese face sheet masks which are widely available online. I decided to try out these Saborino Morning sheet masks, which I luckily got locally at a new Japanese skincare store that popped out in my city. I got the “Fresh Fruit White Type“, which is in the white packaging.

What is a sheet mask?

face-mask

A sheet mask is essentially a serum drenched fabric sheet that is cut out to fit your face. There will be cutouts for the eyes, nose and lips so it rests comfortably on your skin. The fabric can depend on the brand and type you buy, some are 100% cotton or silk sheets. The general purposes of these masks is to hydrate and moisturize your skin and often don’t require a face wash afterwards as it is ideal for the serum to be absorbed into the skin.

So what’s Saborino, who made it?

Saborino is a series of face masks under the company BCL (Beauty Creative Lab) from Japan. They’re not new, first released in 2015 with the original with the yellow packaging. They came out with 4 other variants afterwards. They all claim to do the “quick” morning routine for you, essentially the 3 steps: washing, skin care and moisturizing base. Although I’m not sure how moisturizing counts as a different step than skin care…¯\_(ツ)_/¯. They say that you can wear for a minute and it is effective, you could put your makeup and go afterwards.

How did it perform?

TLDR: For quick specs, click here.

I have to say I like it, but I don’t love it. My first use of it, it stung my face a lot, I’m not someone with overly sensitive skin either. I was disappointed, it felt like it was cooling but also irritating my skin. I kept it on for about 1 minute before I couldn’t take it anymore. Regardless, if you have particularly sensitive skin, avoid the minty variants and opt for the Mixed Berry one.

I felt the guilt of throwing it out because I don’t know who else to pass it to, my mother’s skin is more sensitive than mine. I decided to give it a second try the next morning. Surprisingly didn’t sting anymore, I wasn’t sure if it was because it was more concentrated when it was freshly opened or not. I enjoy using it every morning now, it gives a great glow after use.

Fit: Not great, someone with a wider face will struggle getting this to reach the edges of the face near the ears or jaw line. Eye holes were small and I had to stretch them out gently first before putting it on, in case of burning my eyes by accident. That’s never fun.

Scent: Strong mint with mixture of artificial peach/kiwi. No yogurt smell.

Fabric: 100% Cotton, very soft and not scratchy or thick. Enough stretch to not tear super easily. Has decent amount of serum and is not drenched and drippy. Perfect!

Moisturizing: Yes, glow & dewy skin base ready to go. Makeup applied on smoothly with no pilling or weird reactions. Although with combination skin, I felt like it did make my skin more oily by the end of the day.

Refreshing: Yes, very. Minty.

Packaging: Great! Snap cover seals in the moisture and doesn’t dry it out.
